100 Years Ago- June 16, 1915

Madigan Hospital dedicated — An event of unusual interest to Aroostook County, and especially so to Houlton, took place on Tuesday, June 8th, when the Madigan Memorial Hospital was formally dedicated with appropriate and dignified ceremonies.
Houlton’s population: 6924 — Walter E. Swett has just completed taking the school census and obtained much valuable information. The population of Houlton, 6924, saw an increase of 1075 in the past five years, this gain too from the fact that many B & A employees have moved to Oakfield with their families.

Ross honored with flag — A silk American flag was presented to the Court Street Baptist Church in memory of the late Linwood L. Ross who was president of the Ford Bible Class and active on several church committees.

Sherman surprise landing — Quite a lot of excitement was caused Saturday evening when a large U.S. Army plane circled low several times over Sherman, finally landing in a field owned by Waldo Clark. The pilot proved to be a nephew, Lt. William Clark of Virginia, and son of Jackson Clark, formerly of Sherman Mills.

Bridgewater’s final grads — The 1965 graduating class of Bridgewater Classical Institute, the final graduating class of the school, will conduct Baccalaureate services on Sunday, June 13, in the First Baptist Church. Graduation will be next Thursday at 7:30 p.m. with four honor students, Mary Hogan, valedictorian; Sherry McKeen, salutatorian; Jennifer Craig, first honor essay and Kathy Taylor, second honor essay.
Gifts for Dad — Advertised in this week’s paper: Royal Sovereign pipes and pipe racks, $3.98 each at S. L. White Drug Co.; high-back recliner for $77 at Dunn Furniture Co. and a Zebco spin-cast rod and reel set for $9.99.

Paddington, ‘bear about town’— Paddington Bear, wearing a duffle coat, old bush hat and Wellington boots was very much the “bear about town” as he became the official mascot for Cary Library’s Summer Reading Club.
Holden Post elects officers — A reorganization meeting of the Frank B. Holden Post No. 52 was conducted April 4 at the Post home in Oakfield. Officers elected were: Leroy Hersey, commander; Edward Kennedy, first vice commander; Paul Shield, second vice commander, Owen Prince, Jr., adjutant and financial officer; Dan Leet, chaplain; Laurel McNelly, sergeant of arms and Gary Crandall, service officer.
