WINTHROP – Roger A. Blackstone, 74, of Maranacook Road, died peacefully on Friday, June 5, 2015, at the Alfond Center for Health in Augusta, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Caribou on August 7, 1940, the son of Earl and Alice (Thomas) Blackstone.
Roger graduated from Caribou High School, class of 1958. He attended the University of Maine at Orono and received an Associate’s degree in Agriculture, a Bachelor’s in Business and Economics and his Master’s Degree in Agriculture and Resource Economics. In 1963 he married Cathy Warren.
He had worked for Indian Head Plywood in Vermont and Presque Isle, was manager for Limestone Potato Growers, UMO Extension, and later was self-employed as R. Blackstone Associates, Management Consultants.
Roger served in the Army National Guard from 1960 to 1969. He was active in his community as a member of the Winthrop Lions Club, serving on many committees and holding many State offices including District Governor and Cabinet Treasurer, giving him and his wife Cathy the opportunity to travel world-wide. Roger had many interests including traveling and camping with his family as well as his friends, woodworking, and church activities. He was a member of the Manchester Community Church and Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity at UMO.
He was predeceased by his son, Scott Blackstone; two sisters, Barbara Anguish and Ruth Chamberland; and a brother, Vernon Blackstone. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Cathy Blackstone of Winthrop; a son, Dana Blackstone and his wife, Kim, of Monmouth; a daughter, Cheryl Chase and her husband, Greg, of Warren; five grandchildren, Drew Blackstone, Rachel, Beth, Esther, and Hannah Chase; three sisters, Earlyne Blackstone of Biddeford, Joyce Churchill and her husband, Bob, of Fort Fairfield, and Phyllis Blackstone of Farmington; two brothers-in-law, John Anguish of Brunswick and Dan Chamberland of Clinton; also several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 12, at the Hope Baptist Church, Rt. 202, Manchester. Visiting will be held from 12 until the time of service at church. There will be a gathering directly following the service in the fellowship hall of the church.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may make memorial contributions in Roger’s name to Camp Adventure for Teenagers with Diabetes, c/o Tami Kilcollins at Cary Memorial Hospital, 163 Van Buren Road, Caribou 04736.
