Pony Club riders earn certification

The Meduxnekeag River Pony Club announces the certification of five of its members. A United States Pony Club D1 testing was held on June 7 at Horseplay Farm in Houlton. Members earning their D1 Level certificates are Celina Bechard, 14, daughter of Patti and Stephen Bechard of Sherman; Hannah Brown, 11, daughter of Lynn and

Charles Brown of Dyer Brook; Maggie Crowley, 10, daughter of Laurie and Patrick Crowley of Houlton: Tilly Hamilton, 14, daughter of Carla and Kenny Hamilton of Littleton and Mary Drew Metherell, 7, daughter of Amy Woods Metherell and Wally Metherell of Houlton.
To earn this certificate, these girls passed an examination given by Katie Sypher, an upper level pony-clubber from Penobscot Pony Club in Newburgh, who tested horsemanship, riding skills and equine knowledge.
The D1 level certification is the first of the United States Pony Club’s certificates to be achieved with each level more difficult than the previous one. Pony club members are required to learn more about horses and their care and become increasingly accomplished riders and eventual teachers and mentors for younger members. In addition, the USPC promotes teamwork, a sense of responsibility, safety, good moral judgment and self-confidence.
Meduxnekeag River Pony Club is one of more than 600 pony clubs in the country and one of nine clubs in the state of Maine, known as the Northeast Region. Currently, MRPC has eight members and is always open to more joining. The leader of MRPC is Terri Hill of Houlton.
