East Grand School students participated in the “Latvis Olympics,” named after the late Andrew Latvis, a middle school science teacher and coach, building wood duck boxes as a project. The assignment has become a part of a larger task to involve students in hands-on learning about wildlife habitat and how field data is used to inform
decisions about wildlife management. This is planned to continue to be done through a year-around course called “Outdoor Heritage” in which students explore local resource based topics ranging from forestry and ecology to fish and wildlife management.
In this course, students will engage in field experiences that will compliment scientific approaches to managing natural resources in which the wood duck boxes will be one of a number of projects students will be involved in.
The overall goal is to provide relevant, natural resource based education that will provide students as many opportunity possible to participate and learn through local natural resources.
