Bridgewater Fire Department
Lane Construction was at the Bridgewater Fire Department Tuesday, June 23, educating firefighters on safe and appropriate measures for responding to emergencies while driving through active work zones. Chip Sheldon, project foreman for Lane Construction, spent two hours with 18 department members discussing issues ranging from right-of-way to safe and legal work zone speeds.
The focus of this training was on keeping both emergency-responders and construction workers safe while the construction company is working on the Route 1 project in Bridgewater this summer. While all apparatus drivers of Bridgewater Fire Department equipment are required to pass an Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC), this opportunity has allowed responders to understand the unique aspects of the construction zones, and how to deal with travel on congested single-lane roads.
The Bridgewater Fire Department is grateful for the commitment to community service that Lane Construction and Sheldon have shown through this partnership.
Rotary Club
The Mars Hill Rotary Club met on Tuesday morning, June 23 at 6:30 a.m. at the Aroostook Health Center.
The speaker was Fort Fairfield Rotarian Josie Lopez. She is with the U.S. Border Patrol. She spoke about the trip to Guatemala that Rotarians from Wisconsin, Michigan, Maine and California took. They worked on a common room in a community center as well as a soccer field in the school yard.
The goal of local Rotarians is to write a grant that will allow several area Rotary Clubs to finance projects in Guatemala. These would include water systems, eco stoves and eco-sanitary systems. This proposal would be presented in July of 2016, with the project done in 2017.
