• We are informed by Supt. H.L. Cates of White Mountain Telephone Co. that his company is contemplating the construction of a line from Bangor to Houlton which will give us direct communication with Bangor. This is the sort of enterprise that deserves some support.
• Five carloads of people visited New Sweden on the special train Monday.

House swap in Jemtland — Alfred Abrahamson and family have moved to the Swen Norberg farm, and Mr. and Mrs. Norberg have moved to the house recently purchased from Mr. Abrahamson on the station.
For the cause — A five-cent social was started this week with Mrs. Harry Vinal when four friends were invited to come and bring their own sewing, paying five cents each. Then the next week, or as soon as convenient, each of those four are to ask four friends to their homes and go on until we hope the Relief Corps will have a good sum of money and those invited will feel that their nickel had gone to help a good cause.

From the old country — The Aroostook Republican’s only remaining subscriber in old Sweden, one of many years standing, was canceled last week due to conditions resulting from the European war. A letter from Mrs. Hilda Orgen from Sindesburg, Sweden, states: “It is useless for us to have the Republican here, much as we like it, while the war lasts. Did not get any at all for eight weeks. … If the war stops and neither Russia nor Germany has taken us, I will take it again.” All of which indicates a sad state of affairs existent in those countries under the influence of Hitler and Stalin.
‘The way life should be’ — Nearly all the native folk here and those who come to Aroostook and remain for any length of time want to stay. We doubt if there’s anywhere a region able more readily to sell itself to its natives than this Garden of Maine.

Star Farmer — Gene J. Theriault, a 21-year-old FFA member from Caribou, was named Maine’s Star State Farmer of the Year at the annual convention of the Maine Future Farmers of America held at the University of Maine. This is the highest honor for an FFA member and Theriault is the first Caribou recipient.
