PERHAM, Maine — A former town clerk has been charged with theft after an investigation determined that at least $39,000 was missing from community accounts.
Connie Theriault, 40, who was the town clerk from 2012 until April 1, 2015, was not arrested, but issued a summons for theft, Aroostook County Sheriff Darrell Crandall said in a prepared statement released Wednesday.
After an auditor reported areas of concern, Perham town officials contacted the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office on April 2 to report their suspicions that Theriault had been stealing funds from the town, Crandall said.
Crandall said deputies reviewed hundreds of pages of documents in the possession of the town as well as records obtained from financial institutions, and they also interviewed several witnesses before charging Theriault.
He said that the town, its auditors and deputies have identified more than $39,000 that is purportedly unaccounted for. Additional details about the theft are not being released at this time.
The former clerk is scheduled to make her first appearance in Caribou District Court on Aug. 6.
