ENFIELD, Conn. — There are hundreds of farmers’ markets across the Northeast supplying fresh, local farm products to consumers. In support of these efforts, Farm Credit East recently provided $500 grants to 20 Northeast farmers’ markets, totaling $10,000, for promotion and development of the markets.
“Farm Credit East is pleased to support our local farmers through grants to farmers’ markets,” said Bill Lipinski, Farm Credit East CEO. “The markets provide an important outlet for many of our members to connect directly with their customers, while also supporting local communities. I encourage consumers to support Northeast farmers by visiting these farmers’ markets to buy locally produced food and horticultural products.”
Markets were selected by each of Farm Credit East’s branch offices. In addition, the Association donated 250 reusable bags, with messaging to support Northeast farmers, and signage to promote the market. Houlton Community Farmer’s Market was the only one chosen in Maine, along with markets from five other states Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey and New York.
