Mary Lou Pomeroy and daughter, Jane Foster, arrived in Island Falls the first of the week to spend a few hours visiting with friends. They then departed back to Caribou, but first having lunch at the Brookside and doing some grocery shopping in Houlton.
Arnold and Rosemary Roach have arrived recently from their home in St. Petersburg, Fla., to spend the summer at their cottage on Pleasant Pond. Rosemary certainly enjoys the swimming with friends at Vacationland Estates, while Arnold relaxes at home and they both enjoy visiting with family and friends while here.
Rainy weather has kept me from mowing my huge lawn and I’m afraid the grass has gotten a bit high. I was putting out bird seed for my feathered friends as it has been a bit chilly, but now I have stopped, as I discovered that a pesky gray squirrel has been at the feeders and eaten everything he could find. I caught him in the act the other day, but haven’t seen hide nor hair of him since there were no seeds for him to devour. I think he may have tried to get at the hummingbird feeder as it had been knocked to the ground. I cleaned it up, refilled it and, so far, it is still hanging there.
While mowing my church lawn the other day, I came across a really fat, healthy looking ground hog busily eating the green stuff that was growing near the back porch. He apparently has a home under the steps of the parsonage and made a bee-line for it when I came by with the lawn mower. Maybe my next door neighbor will trap him for us and take him far away. Skunk are still digging up my lawn and leaving little holes to be refilled. I never see them so guess they do all their hard work at night.
I have heard that strawberry picking is now available at Cox’s Farm so I will try to get out there and harvest a few boxes. That will curtail my swimming at the Vacationland Estates pool, but only for a short time — I can swim in the morning and then hurry out to do the picking before it gets too hot. I have seen one deer lately when she darts out of the woods and makes a mad rush for the further end of my lawn as if she was being pursued —then she stands there looking all around before wandering off into the woods. This has happened several times, but I never see anything come after her. Hope it isn’t a coyote.
