CASTLE HILL — As the Independence Day holiday neared, the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday took some liberty away from a suspect allegedly wanted on a federal warrant from the Department of Homeland Security.
Aroostook County Sheriff Darrell Crandall said Friday that a suspect sought by the agency was chased down on foot through the woods in Castle Hill but finally surrendered after a brief pursuit.
The sheriff said that on Wednesday, the Department of Homeland Security notified his office that an arrest warrant had been issued by the U.S. District Court for Caleb Jewett, 24, of Mars Hill.
Jewett was sought by authorities for violating the conditions of his supervised release, as he is on federal probation for a 2012 charge of importation of methamphetamine.
Deputy Sheriff Reid Clark encountered Jewett inside a vehicle at the intersection of Route 163 and the Scopan Road in Castle Hill on Thursday evening, according to Crandall.
Once Clark told Jewett he was under arrest, Crandall said, Jewett tried to lock himself into the passenger side of the vehicle before running into the woods.
Clark chased him down and a brief scuffle ensued, as Jewett continued to resist being arrested. Jewett was subdued and taken into custody with no injuries to either he or the deputy.
Jewett was transported to the Aroostook County Jail in Houlton, where he is being held on a federal detainer from the U.S. Marshals Service.
Jewett also now faces state charges of failure to submit to arrest.
