Enjoying low-tech fun on the mighty Aroostook

Lots of people have said that the youth of today don’t know how to have fun unless they are using the technological toys of our times. Two Washburn boys have made some good fun out of old junk and passed the time away on a few recent hot days in July.

Tom Sawyer would have been proud of 12-year-old Cody Iott and his new friend, 14-year-old Jason Whitmore for their efforts at staying cool, being innovative and making some nice memories for themselves.
Recently, the boys were seen walking the ATV trail with a very large inner tube that had been “donated” to them through Jason’s uncle, John Whitmore. The elder Whitmore had gotten the tire which needed patching from a local farmer he worked for.
The boys took the tube and filled it with air then carried it down to the river, launching it from the landing at the Thomas Brewer Park in Washburn. There the met another chum, Braden Campbell and for a few days these boys enjoyed some real old fashioned rafting fun. Others, including some older residents enjoying the summer days at the river, also enjoyed watching them, perhaps remembering the tube rides of their youth.
Jason has recently moved to Washburn from Alaska where his dad, Jim Whitmore finished serving a nearly-32-year career with the U.S. Army. He enjoys visiting some of his new friends by traveling from the North Wade area on his ATV.
