With summer in full swing and school dismissed for the season, the July 8 School Board meeting was short and sweet. The new superintendent of schools, Brian Carpenter from Ludlow, made his first appearance after only being in the area for about a week.
“I’m meeting people and getting oriented to the community and where things are,” Carpenter said.
The board approved new staff appointments for the upcoming school year. Stephanie Moreland was hired as an English teacher for Presque Isle High School, Heather Bragg was hired as a Grade 6 ELA/Social Studies teacher for Presque Isle Middle School, Tony Garreans was hired as a Computer Technology teacher for Zippel Elementary School, Eli Clemmer was hired as a Library Media Specialist for Presque Isle Middle School and Cathryn Tardie was hired as a Grade 3 teacher at Zippel Elementary School.
With many new additions to the district, Carpenter says it is also nice to see familiar faces, as he has many connections through sports.
“It’s a great opportunity and a great school system,” Carpenter said. “It’s an organization I don’t have to build up, it’s already there. I just have to move it to the next level. That’s my goal.”
Carpenter commended the impact of recently retired Dr. Gehrig Johnson on all the wonderful work he did for the district, and says he hopes to move the district to the next level with the efforts of teachers, staff, parents and community members.
The next school board meeting will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 12 at 5:30 p.m. The location has yet to be determined due to construction in the usual location.
