Kids share wealth to help furry friends

CARIBOU, Maine — The second-grade students in the classrooms of Cheryl Hallowell, Mary Theriault, Gayle Smart and Beth Boone at Caribou’s Hilltop Elementary School recently studied a unit called Pass It On, during which they discovered the importance of helping out and giving back to others.

As a result they held a school-wide penny drive, where they raised $500 to donate to the Halfway Home Pet Rescue in Caribou.

When Norma Milton, president of the HHPR, visited the school to accept the donation, she brought several of her furry friends for the children to visit with. She also presented a program on the importance of caring for pets and having them spayed or neutered.
