Northern Region of Maine Sports Legends selects their scholar/athletes

The Northern Region of Maine Sports Legends annually selects their scholar/athletes to receive a $750 scholarship at the annual banquet at the Alfond Girls and Boys Club in Waterville, this year set for Oct. 4.

A large number of excellent applicants were received from all over Aroostook County and the northern directors of Maine Sports Legends were thankful for all who took the time to apply for the scholarship. Eight scholarships (four for girls and four for boys) will be given out from each region of Maine and the Northern Region has announced that Robbie Watson of Fort Fairfield High School and Sarah Doak of Caribou High School are this year’s recipients.

Robbie Watson

  ROBBIE WATSON, a recent graduate of Fort Fairfield High School, is the recipient of the Maine Sports Legends’ scholar-athlete award and will be honored at a ceremony in Waterville this October.

Watson graduated from Fort Fairfield High School, ranking first in his class. He is the son of Cindy Watson.

Watson participated in varsity golf and was the Tigersí No. 1 golfer. He was Aroostook League champion all four years, was the Class C individual state champion in 2013 and finished in third place in Class C in 2014. He was selected to the Maine Sunday Telegram All-State Team and competed at the 2014 New England High School Golf Championship.

Watson was also on the varsity basketball team all four years and led the team in scoring as a junior and senior. He was selected as a member of the Bangor Daily News Class D All-Tourney Team his senior season, made the All-Aroostook team and the McDonaldís East-West All-Star all-state academic team. His Tiger basketball team won the Eastern Maine title last winter.

He was a member of the National Honor Society and received academic awards in most of his classes throughout his high school career. He was also on the chess and math teams. Watson received the Fort Fairfield Rotary Club Student Spirit Award and volunteered in programs in the community including Special Olympics, Stop Hunger Now and Wide Horizons.

He will attend the University of Maine’s College of Engineering and has been invited into the university’s Honors College in the fall.

Sarah Doak

Doak graduated from Caribou High School in the top 10 percent of her class. She is the daughter of Tim and Cheri Doak.

Doak participated in varsity soccer, varsity Nordic skiing and varsity track and field and was the captain of all three sports teams her junior and senior years.

In Nordic skiing, Doak was a three-time Aroostook League champion and a four-year state meet competitor. She was a member of the National Honor Society, serving as chapter secretary her senior year. Doak also served on the Student Council and was a member of the French Honors Society.

She was the recipient of the Principal’s Award and received high honors throughout her high school career. In the community, she served as blood drive chairman, as an aide in the grade schools during harvest and the summer, United Way Northern Star Project, Aroostook Youth Ski Festival and as an aide in the high school’s athletic office.

Doak will attend the University of Maine in the College of Natural Sciences with a major in food science and human nutrition.
