’Panners celebrate with ninth annual Fun Fest
MAPLETON NEWS

Camp owners and their families took part in several activities at Scopan Lake during the ninth annual Fun Fest, sponsored by the Squapan Outing Club.
Activities took place on Saturday, July 4 at the landing area. The warm, sunny day allowed all the events to take place, starting with outdoor relay games, several including water balloons and buckets of lake water! Bags of patriotic themed toys and treats were buried in a huge sawdust pile for the popular toy hunt and several players of all ages enjoyed a few games of Bingo, with prizes awarded.
A new craft project was introduced this year for families to take part in. Driftwood from the lake was collected and dried for crafters to create their own “art” using various supplies from nature. Teams of two took part in two heats of paddle boat races, with the team of Keagan and Kooper Kinney of Easton taking first prize — in a pink paddle boat. It was the second year in a row that the colorful boat (with different paddlers) took top honors.
The popular, and highly competitive family scavenger hunt had four teams racing to collect fifty items in two-and-a-half hours. Collecting all but two illusive items was the team of Maddie Buzza and Amanda Winslow. Second place went to the team of Abby and Josh Keiser, Shane and Bethany Baker and Jesse and Daisey Hatcher. An evening cribbage tournament was hosted at Gary and Avice Jarvis’ camp. Grace Langley was declared the winner with the highest overall score.
The day ended with a “movie under the stars” at the landing. Many cozied up in lawn chairs and blankets to view two movies projected on a screen. Special thanks to camp owners, Peter Teare and Patti Crooks-Parsons, for making the event happen!
Camp owners taking part in the annual Camp Decorating Contest had their patriotic décor judged during the afternoon. The winner was announced the following weekend at the annual business meeting. First place went to the Gonsioroski Family of Mapleton for their “Living History” display. The family members each dressed up as historic figures, including Abraham Lincoln, Betsy Ross and Sacagawea. During the announcement, the judges commented that they were “blown away” by the creativity and ingenuity displayed. The family was awarded the traveling moose antler with their name engraved on a plaque to enjoy for the upcoming year.
