Washburn students visit Acadian village
WASHBURN NEWS
By Beth Boddy
Living in Northern Maine often requires a long journey to reach a place where a different culture is present.
Instructors at the Washburn 21st Century summer program used craft, reading, math and science activities to introduce the students to a culture that is unlike their own but is fortunately found close to home.
The students explored the local Acadian customs, art, history, and symbols (such as the meaning of the flag) and were well prepared when they traveled to the Acadian Village in Van Buren. This was a fun and educational field trip that served as a wonderful end to the first unit of the summer program.
