Local author publishes second thriller

STOCKHOLM, Maine — An Aroostook County author has released his second novel and will appear at Caribou’s Thursdays on Sweden to sign copies of the book.

Vaughn C. Hardacker of Stockholm was recently named a finalist in the 2015 Maine Literary Awards for “Sniper,” a thriller featuring the characters Lt. Anne Bouchard and former Boston Police detective Mike Houston. Hardacker, a veteran of the U.S. Marines who served in Vietnam, holds degrees from Northern Maine Community College, the University of Maine and Southern New Hampshire University.

His latest book, “The Fisherman,” was released in June by Skyhorse Publishing and rejoins Bouchard and Houston in a tense hunt for a Maine serial killer.

Looking to escape the criminal world of big cities following the capture of the crazed Boston sniper, homicide detectives Houston and Bouchard relocate to the isolated mountains of Maine where they quickly adjust to a quiet life of chopping firewood, relaxing by the steady crackle of the fireplace, and simply enjoying the solitude of the mountains. But their quiet life is abruptly interrupted when Bouchard meets an elderly couple looking for help in locating their missing granddaughter. Suddenly, the two detectives find themselves back in the game.

Author Kate Flora, winner of the 2013 and 2015 Maine Literary Awards for Crime Fiction, has said, “Hardacker is a writer as comfortably at home on the dark streets of Boston as he is in the north woods of Maine. In both places, his story of a twisted serial killer will make you feel like you’re there even as he keeps you right on the edge of your chair. This ensemble of strong men, strong women, good bad guys and bad, bad guys will take you on a trip you won’t want to miss.”

Hardacker will sell and sign his new book during Thursday’s on Sweden festivities in Caribou through the remainder of the summer. For more information, visit his website at vaughnhardacker.com.
