115 Years Ago – 1900

• The refrigerator car service established by the B and A railroad between Caribou and Boston has been discontinued on account of the lack of patronage.

• The closing ball of Miss Nellie Smith’s juvenile dancing class was held in Clark’s hall last Friday evening.

100 Years Ago – July 29, 1915

  Jack and the pea-stalk? – Pea vines eight feet high – impossible? Oh no, not at all. There is no limit to the vegetation in Aroostook. Geo. W. Wright has been doing a little gardening this season and has telephone peas, the vines of which, when stretched to their full height, measure seven and eight feet tall. The pods contain eight, nine, and 10 peas each.

  Local expenses – Of the $2,162.08 allowed by the County Commissioners at their July term, $790.65 is for expenses in the Hillman case, which, so far, has been barren of results.

75 Years Ago – July 25, 1940

  Color films to be shown – Caribou nature-lovers are offered a rare treat on Monday evening when beautiful color films of wildflowers taken on a fishing trip in this vicinity by Gordon Dunthorne will be shown at the Caribou High School Auditorium at 8 o’clock.

  A biting challenge – While other people try to keep away from mosquitoes during the summer months, Phillip Granett, young “iron” man at Rutgers University, goes to a great deal of trouble to get them to bite him. He has endured more than 300,000 bites to help make it possible for other folks to escape insect annoyances.

50 Years Ago – July 29, 1965

  SAD under study – The Limestone School Committee recently directed Arthur Doe, superintendent of schools, and James Brown, superintendent of Caswell School, to prepare a new study relating to the formation of a Limestone-Caswell School Administrative district.

  Legal news – Today, a revolutionary, exciting new concept in American law is being considered. Soon poor people will be able to receive free legal services. Immediate programs are being developed by the Office of Economic Opportunity to provide federal funds for lawyers to give free legal services to the poor.

25 Years Ago – July 25, 1990

  Optic cable damaged — A July 5 fire in Etna disabled a fiber-optic cable providing service to Aroostook County residents.  The cable provides a variety of telecommunication services, including, credit-card authorizations, facsimiles, and computer links between banks and supermarkets and airlines.

 

  Blossom Queen — As if it wasn’t enough to win the Maine Potato Queen Crown, Josette Huntress, “Miss Limestone,” also took the “Miss Congeniality” and talent trophies — an unprecedented triple win that elated her fans and triggered pandemonium in the packed and overheated Gardner Gymnasium Saturday Night.
