Hodgdon High’s 21st CCLC After School Program recently ran a week of Outdoor Adventures for interested students. Maine Guide Tammi Matula gave two workshops — one for biking basics and another for canoeing basics.
The students then traveled to the Katahdin Woods and Waters Recreation Area for a full day canoeing on both the Sebois River and the East Branch of the Penobscot. Host Susan Adams canoed with the students to provide educational information on the geographical area and wildlife. Elliotsville Plantation, Inc. sponsored the day by providing transportation, canoes, a guide and facilities for the students to use.
Later in the week, the group visited Acadia National Park, where they spent a day biking the Carriage Trails. These trails were financed and directed by philanthropist John D. Rockefeller, Jr. between 1913 and 1940. There are over 45 miles of trails for use by the public.
Students used map skills to negotiate the trails and took turns being group leaders. Students observed the many stone faced bridges that grace the park as well as the pristine waters of Eagle Lake which is so pure it does not need to be filtered before drinking. Students said it was one of the best weeks they spent so far this summer. More outdoor adventures will be offered to Hodgdon High students when school resumes this fall.
