– Dealers are doing a big business in railroad ties, large numbers of which are being brought in daily.
– There will be a personally conducted excursion via the B&A to Quebec and St. Anne De Beaupre leaving Caribou August 14th. The fare from Caribou to Quebec is $7 and to Saint Anne De Beaupre is $7.50. Further particulars may be obtained of C.W. Robbins of Old Town.
100 years ago – August 5, 1915
– Rollover on Horseback Road — What might have been a serious accident occurred Sunday when an automobile owned by parties in Danforth went over an embankment about 20 feet on what is known as Horseback road, near H.W. Stewart’s residence below Houlton. The auto, after turning over twice, landed in an upright position with a few slight injuries and a broken windshield. The occupants escaped unhurt, with the exception of a small boy who sustained a sprained ankle.
– No two-wheelers — Use of bicycles or motorcycles in the rural delivery service is prohibited by an order issued Monday by Postmaster General Burleson, effective Jan. 2, 1916. In announcing his order, Mr. Burleson holds that vehicles of these types do not have carrying capacity needed for the parcel post service and do not afford necessary protection for the mail in bad weather. The order will affect about 8,000 carriers, who now use the bicycle or motorcycle to cover their routes.
75 years ago – August 1, 1940
– PI win Army Airport Nod — Citizens of Caribou, Fort Fairfield, Limestone, Washburn, and all of the county to the North were surprised and disturbed by an announcement on Monday by Major Harold L. Clark, attached to the office of the chief of the air corps, designating Presque Isle as the airport to be given priority for development by WPA Funds because of its “military value.” Leading citizens of this entire region indicated their disapproval in telegrams to Maine’s representatives in Congress and demanded reconsideration of the sites.
– New sidewalk coming — Construction was started this morning, Thursday, on the 1,150 foot long, four and a half feet wide sidewalk on the east side of North Main Street.
50 years ago – August 5, 1965
– Improving Long Distance — A $600,000 facility to improve long distance telephone calls routing to and from Maine is now in full operation.
25 years ago – August 1, 1990
– Northern aid wanted — Members of the Committee to Revitalize the Turnpike in southern Maine met in Aroostook County Thursday to gain support for the five-year revitalization project expected to cost $167 million.
– Safety violations — Loring Air Force Base has been cited by the federal Occupational and Health Administration for 17 instances of safety violations at the LAFB heating plant, according to citation documents mailed Friday to base officials.
