MAPLETON, Maine — Two men were injured in a two-vehicle crash in Mapleton on Monday evening, according to Maine State Police.
Peter Haskell, 66, of Burlington, Vermont, was traveling east on Route 163 at about 3 p.m. when his 2005 Volvo station wagon drifted across the centerline, Lt. Brian Harris said in a press release issued late Monday evening.
At the same time, Robert Stepnowski, 64, of Winterville was traveling westbound and attempted to avoid Haskell but could not steer his 2014 Dodge Ram pickup out of the way in time, and the two vehicles struck head on, according to Harris.
Stepnowski was trapped in his vehicle, and members of the Mapleton Fire Department had to use extrication equipment to free him.
Stepnowski and Haskell were taken by ambulance to The Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle to be treated for undisclosed injuries. An update on their conditions was not immediately available Tuesday. Both were wearing their seatbelts, according to Harris.
Both vehicles were destroyed in the crash, he said.
Trooper Travis Luce responded to the emergency call and was assisted at the scene by Detective Jeff Clark and deputies from the Aroostook County sheriff’s office.
