WAGM anchor honored for community service
PRESQUE ISLE — Local television news anchor/reporter Shawn Cunningham of WAGM-TV was recently named Ms. New England Community Service America 2016.
Over the next year, Shawn Cunningham will represent the title while continuing to promote the importance of community empowerment and individual leadership through service. Her service efforts were recognized on the national level this year, as she received the Presidential Volunteer Service Award for committing more than a thousand hours of community service in 2014.
Although balancing a busy full-time schedule of family and job, Cunningham said service work is a commitment she will always maintain.
“I believe service is the way to develop leadership skills on and off the job,” she said. “My platform is about cultivating corporate partnerships (the business sector) with civic organizations to coalition and promote service opportunities that strengthen our workforce and above all else strengthen a resolve to build stronger communities.”
Cunningham is the morning anchor/reporter for WAGM-TV’s “The Morning Edition.” She is also the Presque Isle station’s health correspondent for “Medical Mondays.” She is the recipient of two 2012 Maine Association of Broadcasters Awards in Journalism, her fourth and fifth. Her series “Medical Mondays” was honored with an Outstanding Public Affairs in Television award.
Cunningham is currently involved with several community service endeavors in northern Maine, including the Presque Isle Kiwanis Club and Business and Professional Women’s Clubs.
