EASTON, Maine — Aroostook County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating the theft of two cars from a dealership, stolen sometime late Friday or early Saturday, that were found crashed and abandoned, according to Sheriff Darrell Crandall.
The cars, a gold Chrysler and a maroon Volkswagen, were stolen from Keith’s Auto on the Center Road in Easton, Crandall said Sunday morning.
Sheriff’s deputies discovered the Chrysler around 2 a.m. Saturday, which was abandoned after it struck a utility pole, Crandall said.
“At that time, there was no reason to suspect the vehicle was stolen,” he said. “There was no one around, no sign of injury and the registered owner did not answer the door when the deputies went knocking.”
Crandall said his deputies initially suspected the crash was alcohol related given the late hour and the fact no one was with the car.
Later Saturday morning, he said, deputies recovered the Volkswagen, also damaged, and it was discovered both had been stolen from the auto lot.
“We do have leads and are following up on those,” he said, adding evidence has been collected from both vehicles and declined to provide further details.
