Drum beats in memory of Portage Lake woman
PORTAGE LAKE, Maine — Family and friends of Wilza Robertson have recently donated a ceremonial Native American drum to the town of Portage Lake in her memory.
The drum was first used during the recent annual canoe carry on Saturday, Aug. 15, 2015 and it was noted that the sound of the drum resonated around the lake for all to hear. This is a traditional canoe carry from Fish River to the Aroostook River, connecting two watersheds at Little Machias Lake.
This carry is also known as ‘portaging’ the canoes and is how Portage Lake got its name. The local tribe, the Wesget Sipu, or the “Fish River People,” have been a part of the carry ceremony for several years and will be able to continue utilizing the drum, which will become a part of area activities.
Wilza was part of the Mohawk tribal system, and was proud of her Native heritage. She would also have been pleased for the choice of the drum in her memory.
Town officials said the community of Portage Lake is honored to accept this official Native American drum to keep and display in the town office for all to see.
