Houlton Salvation Army to start soup kitchen

HOULTON, Maine — Seeing a demand in the community for a soup kitchen, the new leaders of the Houlton Salvation Army have decided to start feeding those in need.
Lt. Elizabeth Nicoll, who took over the Houlton branch with her husband Dominic July 1, explained that one of the first things they learned upon arriving in Houlton was a lack of any type of soup kitchen to feed the hungry.

The Salvation Army will operate its soup kitchen every Wednesday (starting Aug. 26), from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the 12 Court St. branch headquarters.
“When we first got here, we started asking around to find out what people’s needs were,” she said. “One of the things that kept coming up was a soup kitchen. We know there is not another one in the area. It’s not just for people to come in and get a meal. It’s also for people to come and fellowship in a safe, comfortable environment.”
The Nicolls spent the past two years at the Salvation Army College for Officer Training in Suffern, N.Y., before being commissioned as lieutenants and ordained as Christian ministers. The Houlton location is their first assignment.
Nicoll said volunteers are certainly welcomed and needed to help pull off this venture.
“We have some funding for the next couple of months and are working to secure some more,” she said. “We could definitely use volunteers for the first couple of weeks to help with cooking and serving.”
