WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King announced last week that the National Parks Service has awarded the Aroostook Band of Micmacs $39,926 to support the preservation of tribal land and cultural heritage.
“We are pleased the National Park Services recognizes the importance of preserving the Micmac culture, which is intertwined with that of Maine,” the senators said in a joint statement. “This funding will help preserve Micmac history and ensure that their legacy is taught to and passed along to future generations in Maine.”
This grant funding will support projects to establish an Aroostook Band of Micmacs repository of historic tribal veteran images and oral histories, and provide community training on preservation practices for private military collections within tribal homes.
