Homemade dog biscuits

It seems like summer has finally kicked in the past few weeks with temperatures in the high 80s. The hot, muggy weather creates many uncomfortable situations for those that suffer with the high humidity. The same goes for our four legged family members.
Be sure to keep your pets inside if possible. If your pet does have to be outside, make sure that your pet has a cool shelter out of the direct sun, with lots of fresh water. And NEVER leave your pet in an unattended vehicle! Even a few minutes could prove deadly for an animal.
It is hard sometimes to find healthy treats for our dogs. I myself do not buy anything but Made in the USA. There are many products that are made in other countries and knowing where and how your pet’s food is made is one of the best things you can do for your beloved pet.
I thought I would share a couple of dog biscuit recipes that I found in my Planet Dog Doglopedia by Sandra and Harry Choron.
Cheese Bone Cookies
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 ¼ cups of cheese, any kind, shredded
2 garlic cloves, minced
½ cup vegetable oil
4 Tbsp. water
Preheat oven to 400 F. Combine flour, cheese, garlic and oil; knead well. Add water, if needed, to form stiff dough. Roll out on floured surface to ½ inch thickness; cut into shapes. Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 10-15 minutes or until bottoms are lightly browned. Cool and refrigerate in airtight container.
No Flea Dog Biscuits
(Don’t use this recipe if your dog has a yeast allergy.)
2 cups all-purpose flour
½ cup wheat germ
½ cup brewer’s yeast
1 tsp salt
2 cloves garlic, minced
3 tbsp. vegetable or olive oil
1 cup chicken or beef stock
Preheat oven to 400 F. Grease two to three baking sheets. Combine flour, wheat germ, yeast and salt. In a large bowl combine garlic and oil. Slowly stir flour mixture and stock alternately into oil and garlic, beating well, until the dough is well mixed. Shape dough into a ball.
On floured surface roll out dough to ½ inch thick. Using a 2-inch biscuit cutter cut dough into rounds. Transfer to baking sheets. Bake 20-25 minutes or until well browned. Turn off heat and allow biscuits to dry in oven for several hours. Be sure to store in your refrigerator or freezer.
Hope these are enjoyable treats for your dog.
