Sports Briefs (week of 9-2-15)

CMS boys top PI White

     The Caribou Middle School boys’ soccer team scored six unanswered goals after falling behind early, en route to a 6-1 victory over Presque Isle White last Tuesday in Presque Isle.

     Parker Deprey and Benoit Levesque scored two goals each, while Hayden Hunter and Alex Bouchard netted one each. Bouchard, Deprey and Ethan Holdsworth picked up assists.

     Brandon Jalbert, Brevin Barnes and Joseph Cimino were solid field contributors for the Vikings and Jacob Paul was strong in goal.

Wyman aces seventh hole at CCC

     Jamie Wyman of Caribou recorded a hole-in-one Friday at Caribou Country Club.

     Wyman aced hole No. 7 for the first hole-in-one on the course this year, according to club pro Jeff Jose. Witnessing the shot were Joe Joe Sleeper and Dennis Sergent.

Wheeler wins alumni race

     Nicholas Wheeler placed first in the Caribou Community Alumni Night Race, held Aug. 21 at Caribou High School.

     Wheeler had a time of 16 minutes and 27 seconds on the 2.9-mile race to top the field of 88 participants.

     Curtis Wheeler was second in 16:42 and Chris Rines placed third in 16:50.

     The race is unique in that those 16 years and older or middle school subtract four minutes from their actual time, those between 50-59 subtract three minutes, those 40-49 two minutes and those 30-39 one minute.

     Thomas Beckum and Jon O’Meara tied for fourth with identical adjusted times of 16:57.

     The first female was Teagan Ewings, whose time was 18:43, good for 14th overall.

Officiating class

     Basketball officiating school for new officials will be held Mondays and begins Sept. 28 at Presque Isle High School.

     The class will be held from 7-9 p.m. and the cost is $40. For more information on the class and the specific location, contact Harry Orser at 425-4451.

Owl soccer teams’ upcoming home games

     The University of Maine at Presque Isle men’s soccer team will play its home opener Friday at 3 p.m. against St. Thomas University of Fredericton, New Brunswick. The Owls will also be at home Sunday against Maine Maritime Academy (2 p.m.) and next Wednesday, Sept. 9 against UM-Farmington (4 p.m.)

      The women will also be in action for the first time at Park Family Field on the UMPI campus Sept. 9 for a 2 p.m. match against UMF.

      Colby Holdsworth of Caribou and Johnny Theriault of Fort Fairfield are local players who are newcomers to the Owl men’s roster, joining sophomore Matthew Manter of Caribou.

      Players suiting up for the UMPI women from the region are freshmen Mikayla Churchill of Washburn and sophomore Janae Libby of Fort Fairfield.

      The Owl squads opened on the road Tuesday afternoon at Unity College.
