Fort Fairfield soccer teams yet to taste defeat

A quarter of the way through their regular season schedules, the Fort Fairfield Tiger girls’ and boys’ soccer teams are sporting perfect records.

Both teams survived difficult tests last week to each move to 4-0. Their next opponent will be East Grand Thursday in Danforth.
The girls needed overtime last Tuesday to defeat Central Aroostook in Mars Hill, 3-2. FF grabbed a 2-0 lead on goals by Chelsey Pelkey and Alexis Coiley before the Panthers knotted the score in the second half with goals by Delaney Grass and Jadeyn Giberson.
Pelkey’s second goal of the match, which came in the second overtime period, ended it.
Fort’s Sarah Watt saved two of nine shots and CA’s Ashlee Harris saved nine of 14. The Panthers evened their record at 2-2.
The Tiger boys had to rally from a 3-1 deficit at intermission Friday in beating Southern Aroostook, 4-3. Ryan Player had a pair of unassisted goals 2:02 apart early in the second half to tie the score before Yoni Majia converted a Player assist for the game-winning goal.
SA took the early lead thanks to two goals by Jackson Mathers and a single goal by Tyler Batchelder, with Chris Gill scoring in the first half for Fort Fairfield.
The Tigers outshot the Warriors, 23-9, with Dalton Cassidy making six saves for FF and Nolan Altvater 13 for SA.
The Fort Fairfield girls defeated Southern Aroostook that afternoon, 7-0.
The Ashland girls are now 6-0 after easing past Washburn (Sept. 1 and Monday) in their only matches of the week. In the 11-0 victory at home last Tuesday, senior Savannah Flint established a new career goals record at the school by netting five. Her mark of 73 got her past Marissa Chasse, who graduated last year with 72. Mackenzie Carter added three goals and Caitlin Paradis two goals and two assists for the winners. Cami Deabay, a freshman, tallied her first career goal.
The Hornets held a whopping 41-3 advantage in shots on goal as Megan Cote garnered her fourth shutout of the season. Monday’s score was 9-0, increasing Ashland’s margin of victory this season to a whopping 68-1 in its six matches.
The Hornet boys fell to 3-2 overall following a 2-0 home loss to Washburn. Jovanni Taveras had both goals for the winners as Caleb Thompson (eight saves on 12 shots) and the Beaver defense shut down Ashland. Timmy Tarr had six saves on 15 shots in the loss.
Prior to being blanked by Ashland, the Washburn girls (1-7-1) were shut out for the fourth consecutive match as Easton handed the Beavers a 1-0 defeat Thursday in Washburn. Izzy Morin scored with 1:30 to play in the first half for the only goal of the game. Blake Bradley (13 saves on 22 shot) outdueled Taylor Howe (21 saves on 32 shots) in the battle of the goalkeepers. Easton is now 2-5 overall.
The Beavers had been outscored by a 38-0 margin over their last five contests.
The boys’ team at Washburn picked up another big win later in the week, stopping Easton in a home game Thursday, 3-1. Coach Ben Goodwin’s Beavers improved to 5-3, while Ryan Shaw’s Bears currently stand at 4-3.
The Bear teams will be in St. Agatha today to take on Wisdom and then prepare to host Central Aroostook Friday afternoon. The Panther boys (3-1) have been off since Aug. 27.
The Presque Isle girls exploded for seven goals Saturday in a romp over Ellsworth. Amelia Theriault scored three goals, fellow freshman Maddie Michaud had two and senior Kerrigan LeBlanc also tallied twice for the Wildcats, now 2-1 on the season. PI suffered its loss at Caribou last Wednesday, 3-1, with Taylor Williams scoring the team’s lone goal.
The Wildcat boys’ team was seven minutes away from pulling off an upset over the defending Eastern Maine Class B champion Ellsworth Eagles Saturday. They led at that point, 3-2, but two fouls in the penalty area led to converted penalty kicks and the Eagles came back for a 4-3 triumph.
PI junior Nick Bartlett scored on a header off a Josiah Morse corner kick and Bartlett also drilled in a direct kick as the ‘Cats and Eagles were tied at halftime, 2-2. Ryle Mortland scored off a Cooper Madore assist early in the second half to give PI the lead before Ellsworth made the late comeback.
