PRESQUE ISLE — The Aroostook County Action Program, Inc., has announced that April Flagg has been appointed project director for the Regional Alternative to Secure Confinement project.

“This position is a result of a grant that ACAP received from the state of Maine Department of Corrections/Division of Juvenile Services,” explained Galan Williamson, regional correctional administrator for region 3, Division of Juvenile Services.

“We are so pleased to partner with ACAP. This project will provide a hub of services, supervision, and supports for youth under DOC supervision with the goal of reducing the number of confined youth.

“April has devoted her career to improving and increasing the opportunities for youth in Aroostook County and we look forward to working with her to help our most vulnerable young citizens achieve success while under supervision and into adulthood,” Williamson added.

Flagg was most recently the executive director of Aroostook Aspirations Initiative. Her experience in education, including 15 years in the classroom combined with her previous experience with juvenile justice programs and her leadership training, make her the perfect choice for this challenging yet necessary program, officials said.

Flagg was active in the Maine Education Association and was integral in curriculum coordination and student services at MSAD #45, where she spent the bulk of her career.

“This is such an incredible opportunity for the youth of Aroostook County,” said Flagg.  “Now more than ever, our communities are working to collaborate, join services and coordinate offerings.  This program will bring together the community partners who are already providing services and will identify gaps that exist.

“Filling the service gaps, assuring appropriate resources, and working to encourage collaboration among community partners in Aroostook County, Maine and our Country will help strengthen our response to those who need our support most,” she added. “I’m so looking forward to working with our judges, our probation officers, police departments and the Department of Corrections.”

Flagg earned her Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education/English from the University of Maine at Presque Isle. She began her duties at ACAP Sept. 9.
