Island Falls Notes

Alan Chamberlain has returned to his home in West Point, Va., after spending several months at the Chamberlain cottage on Lower Mattawamkeag Lake. While here he did a bit of work on the inside of the cottage, repairing any damage from the winter weather on the outside.

Maurine Hannaford has recently spent several days with her aunt, Riva H., and had a great time visiting at the Amish store, having lunch at the Brookside and exploring the area in and around Island Falls, especially curious about such names as the Winding Hill Road and Poor Man’s Retreat Road. She has since returned to her home in Kennebunk.

I haven’t seen any groundhogs in quite a while and am hoping they have left the area for good. The last one sighted was about six weeks ago.

I added fresh food to the hummingbird feeder about a week ago and it is half gone already. I don’t think they will be here much longer, as they usually depart from this part of the woods for warmer weather about Sept. 15.

I have now begun putting out a few sunflower seeds and have seen a couple of chickadees and a swallow or two flying in to get their lunch.

My next-door neighbor, Judy, has seen the doe and her fawns on her lawn occasionally this summer, and I saw them once about the end of August. I used to have a lot of them every year and sure hope they will return.

I did see a couple of larger crows out back the other day and they are still flying up to the birch trees’ limbs and resting there while looking around the lawn for possible food. So far, the branch they perched on hasn’t broken and sent them tumbling toward the ground, as it did one day last winter.
