100 Years Ago – September 22, 1915
Prospects of farm crops — Bumper crops this year now seems assured, based on a canvas made by the thousands of agents of the Department of Agriculture throughout the United States. It issued forecasts showing the prospects of virtually all of the principal farm crops improved during August – except potatoes and rice.

75 Years Ago – September 19, 1940
Has office — Dr. Donald Ellis, Optometrist opened an office in the Masonic Building, Market Square this week. Dr. Ellis is a graduate of the Houlton schools and received his BS degree in Education from Stout Institute, Wisconsin. He is a recent graduate of the Northern Illinois College of Optometry, Chicago Ill., where he was awarded the OD degree.

CROWNED — Audrey M. Good of Monticello, 17-year-old beauty, was selected from a field of 15 contestants to wear the crown and title of Potato Blossom Queen of 1940. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Good.
Houlton draft board — Houlton will be one of three Aroostook towns where a draft board will be located when conscription registration begins on Oct. 16. It is estimated that there are between 400 and 500 men in Houlton within the 21-35 age limit who will be required to register.
50 Years Ago – September 16, 1965
Severson at top in bar exam — Gary A. Severson, who was admitted to the Maine Bar on September 2 after tying for highest honors in the Maine Bar exams in Portland, has become associated with the Houlton law office of Albert P. Putnam. Mr. Severson is a 1957 graduate of Houlton High School and a 1961 graduate of the University of Maine. He was graduated cum laude from Rutgers Law School in Camden, N.J. last June.
September — It is a gay and exhilarating time of year after dog days have slipped over the horizon. Not yet the equinox that tells us officially autumn is here; not yet snappy nights when the red line goes down in the 20’s and gray-frosted grass is crinkled with cold. This is a heart-lifting period of the annual cycle. It is good to savor the days and enjoy the beauty that crowns the last days of summer.
25 Years Ago – September 19, 1990
Help still needed — At the A.E. Howell Wildlife Refuge in North Amity we must finish the pens and the building for the three caribou scheduled to arrive at the end of September. All of this has to be finished before the Maine Caribou Transplant Corporation and the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife will grant us a permit to have these beautiful animals for our educational programs.
Recording artist — Gordon Jensen, a recording artist and composer of Christian music for the past 20 years, will be at the Houlton Full Gospel Assembly of God on Sept. 26. The service begins at 6:30 p.m. Rev. Vinal A. Thomas invites all to attend.
