Owl runner gains weekly honor
University of Maine at Presque Isle Connor Hrynuk, a freshman from Boonville, N.Y., has been chosen as the Association of Division III Independents men’s cross country runner of the week.
In his first collegiate race, Hrynuk performed exceptionally well by racing at a 5:47 mile pace, which was good enough for a sixth-place finish out of a strong field of 105 runners at the Husson Invitational in Bangor. Hrynuk’s time of 28:49 on the eight-kilometer course led the Owls to a third-place team finish.
Tigers and Panthers to play in league golf championship
The golf teams from Fort Fairfield and Central Aroostook are now preparing for Friday’s Aroostook League Championship to be held at VaJoWa in Island Falls beginning at 9 a.m.
Hodgdon and Southern Aroostook are the other teams taking part in the event, which also serves as a qualifier for the Class C state tournaments in October.
The Panthers and Tigers played a regular season match last Wednesday at Mars Hill Country Club, with FF coming up with a 9-2 victory. Shane Stackpole, one of only two CA golfers competing on the afternoon, was the medalist with a 49. Carter Bruce had a 51 for the Tigers.
Central Aroostook also fell to Southern Aroostook Thursday by a 9-2 score. The match was played at VaJoWa and Stackpole again was the medalist with a 46.
Caribou Adventure Challenge
The annual Caribou Adventure Challenge will be held Saturday at the Otter Street Park and Ride, rain or shine.
Registration is at 8:30 a.m. and the actual event gets underway at 10 a.m. A $100 cash payout will be offered in the categories of top overall male finisher, top overall female finisher, first-place four-person adult team ages 19 and over, first-place four-person student team ages 19 and under and first-place family team (must have a minimum of three family members).
The distance is five kilometers and registration fees are $15 for adults and $10 for students, with $40 for a family of four and $5 for each additional family member. The first 50 to register will receive a T-shirt. Call 493-4224 for more information.
Elks to host soccer shoot
Presque Isle Elks Lodge 1954 will host its annual Soccer Shoot Contest on Sunday, Sept. 27 at 9 a.m. at the University of Maine at Presque Isle. The contest takes place behind the Gentile Hall athletic building.
This soccer contest is free and is open to all youth under 14 years of age as of Aug. 1, 2015. There will be divisions for boys and girls and four age categories for the contest — under age 8; ages 8-9; ages 10-11 and ages 12-13. Trophies will be awarded to the winners in each division and age group.
Winners will be eligible to move on to the District Soccer Shoot to be held in October. District winners will compete in a State Soccer Shoot contest on Oct. 21, to be held at the Augusta Elks Lodge. The Presque Isle Elks will pay for the travel expenses of local winners in relation to the state contest.
Contestants in the categories under age 10 will attempt to kick a soccer ball through five different size goals.
For contestants in the two older age categories, a standard soccer goal will be marked out into grids. Contestants will attempt penalty kicks, with the greatest points awarded to kicks in the upper corners of the goal.
The Elks will be serving grilled hot dogs, soda and chips, which will be free to all contestants and their parents.

Officiating class
Basketball officiating school for new officials will be held Mondays and begins Sept. 28 at Presque Isle High School.
