Flewelling Farms in Easton was the recipient of a prestigious award at the annual McCain Grower Barbecue.
Champion grower selection is based on the highest standing quality of the following three delivery categories: field direct delivery, winter storage delivery and refrigerated storage. In attendance to accept the award were Jerry, Bruce and Nick Flewelling.
Bruce Flewelling said he was surprised to receive the award and happy that his father and son were both there to accept the award with him. At the barbecue, Easton Field Department Manager Bart Bradbury noted that when McCain Foods opened for french fry production in Easton in 1976, Flewelling Farms made the first delivery of potatoes into the facility.
FFA annual banquet
The Easton FFA held its annual banquet Sept. 10, 2015. Following opening ceremonies, attendees enjoyed a fine meal of barbecue chicken, potato salad and rolls. FFA state president Dayna McCrum and Carson Flewelling led the group in a chorus of “Happy Birthday” for chapter president Carter Mazerolle, who was celebrating his 17th birthday. McCrum spoke of her experiences as state president and challenged members to step out of their comfort zone and try new things. Flewelling gave the treasurer’s report, Kooper Kinney reported on the fall trip, Keagan Kinney reported on the McCain plant tour and Bruce Blodget and Kevin Marquis reported on the national convention trip.
Discovery Degrees were awarded to Troy Chasse, Logan Embelton, Dawson Haney, Kassidi Hanson, Kirtas Jandreau, Kooper Kinney and Alexis Pelkey.
Green Hand degrees were awarded to Chris Busse, Carson Flewelling, Wilder Mitchell, Shelliese Mullen, John Anderson, Noah Hanscomb and Delaney Leach.
Chapter degrees were awarded to Keagan Kinney, Michael Brown and Ethan Luciano.
Chapter officers for Easton during the 2015 – 2016 school year are President Carter Mazerolle, Vice President Jordan White, Secretary Logan Embelton, Treasurer Carson Flewelling, Reporter Chris Busse, Sentinel Wilder Mitchell and Junior Advisor Jason Gurley.
Happy Days update
The Happy Days Senior Citizens’ Club met for a potluck lunch on Sept. 8 with eight members and one guest present. The next meeting will be a potluck lunch at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24 in the Recreation Room at the Manor. Please join them and bring a friend.
BoxTops being collected
The Easton PTO is ollecting BoxTops for Education as an easy way to earn money for the school. Ask friends and family to save BoxTops for you and send a self-addressed-stamped envelope to all your friends and family and have them return their BoxTops to you. Parents, be sure to put your child’s name on the envelope and turn into classroom teacher.
Kiwanis meetings
Kiwanis Club of Easton meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month from 6-7 p.m. at the Odd Fellows Hall. Everyone is welcome to attend. Dinner is provided for a small fee.
Sesquicentennial items for sale
The committee is currently selling the following items to commemorate Easton’s year-long 150th celebration, including Easton history books for $10, 20-ounce glasses with Bears and Sesquicentennial logos for $8, glass coffee mugs with Bears and Sesquicentennial logos for $8, royal blue T-shirts with sesquicentennial logos for $8, royal blue hoodie sweatshirts with sesquicentennial logos for $25 and two-tone caps or standard caps with Easton Bears logos or Sesquicentennial logos for $10.

Special rec activities
Swimming lessons will be held at Gentile Hall and are open to children ages four and older. Students will be split by abilities. Classes will be held Mondays and Fridays at 1 p.m. from through Oct. 9. Transportations departs from the hall at 12:30 p.m. and returns at 2:30 p.m. The cost is $30 for Easton residents. There is still time to join.
Dance Camp will be offered in conjunction with Moon Dance Studios on Sept. 28 and 29 and Oct. 1 and 2 from 9:30-11 a.m. at the Hall. The cost is $25 and is open to grades one and up. The class will focus on Hip Hop and Jazz. Participants should dress in comfortable clothes to move easily.
Super Art Camp will be offered Oct. 5, 6, 8 and 9 from 10 a.m.-noon at the Hall. The cost is only $8 and is open to grades 1 and up. Participants will be exploring color, drawing techniques, and graphic design while creating their own super heroes. Then they wi’ll finish up with a multi-media portrait/poster of the new character.
Sewing classes will be offered Sept. 28 and 29 and Oct. 1 during the following times: Monday, 11:15 a.m.-12:30 p.m.; Tuesday, 1:45-3 p.m.; and Thursday, 11:15 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The cost is $15, which includes all supplies. Youth must be in the first grade to participate and a minimum of six paid participants sign up for the class to be offered. This program is designed to teach children the basics of sewing. Youth will be learning to sew by hand and on a machine. The class will finish with their own tote bag project.
Yoga for Kids classes will be held on Wednesdays from Oct. 14 through Nov. 18. There is no class on Oct. 21. The cost is $20 and there must be 15 participants to run the program. Classes will take place at the Hall until 4 p.m. and be instructed by Julie French. This isn’t your traditional Yoga class as children’s yoga is a different way to learn about the body. They will stretch, strengthen, gain flexibility and balance through short, age-appropriate activities, as well as learn how to calm their bodies, breath and mind. Yoga has shown to improve concentration, memory, attention, problem-solving and decision-making — all terrific skills needed for learning. Relaxation is just as important as exercise and they will learn these concepts and more, all by having fun!
