115 Years Ago – 1900
• On October 1, the ownership of the Aroostook Republican passed again into the hands of the man who for 13 years owned, managed, and controlled it: Alfred W. Hall.
• The potato crop is very irregular this year. Once in awhile, we hear of a field hardly worth digging, but there are fields producing 80 to 90 barrels per acre. The complaints of a very poor crop have been a trifle overdrawn. This is the poorest crop yield since 1897, three years earlier.
170 Years Ago – September 23, 1915
Special ride– For the benefit of the Aroostook County passengers attending the Music Festival in Bangor on October 7, 8, and 9, a special train will be run by the Bangor and Aroostook R&R from Northern Maine Jct., through to Caribou on Sunday, October 10.
Traffic– One Caribou gentlemen, in driving by team to Presque Isle to the fair, met 94 automobiles. Another gentlemen who made the same trip by auto met 56 automobiles and 14 teams, a ration of four to one in favor of the horseless carriage.
75 Years Ago – September 19, 1940
L.S. Hall Co. Opens New Store– L.S. Hall opens a new story in Caribou on Friday. Located in the store formerly operated by the J.C. Penney Co., the new company boasts of a most modern and up-to-date store with a complete line of ladies’, men’s, boy’s and girl’s clothing.
Valuable Collection– A collection of over 70 valuable Indian stone implements including arrowheads, knives and other tools were secured last week by Caribou’s noted geologist, Prof. Olof O. Nylander, on a trip to Ashland and vicinity. Many of these items are now on display at the museum.
50 Years Ago – September 23, 1965
Grant home demolished– The old Grant home on Sweden Street is being demolished this week and is to be replaced on the site near the County Court House by a modern professional building. The new structure is to be built by Dr. George T. Corey, dentist; Dr. Theodore Cummings, optometrist, and Ferris A. Freme, attorney.

25 Years Ago – September 19, 1990
Pro-life support march– Approximately 65 Pro-life supporters from Aroostook County and New Brunswick rallied and marched in the parking lot of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Presque Isle to lend their support to the pro-life movement and “to make the people of Aroostook County aware.” The march ended at The Aroostook Medical Center on Academy Street.
Declining enrollment– School enrollment figures, harvest break plans, and increases in meal prices were among the issues addressed by the Caribou Board of Education during a two-hour meeting last Wednesday night. According to Superintendent Irving Belanger, enrollment among the four schools fell 39 students, totalling 1,911.
