Ford knows how to stop war — Henry Ford says he has a staggering blow for the “armament crowd” stored up for the delivery when he holds a conference with Secretary of the Navy Daniels in Washington this week. “It would be no trick at all to build a submarine one-fourth of the size of those now in use that could carry a pill at the end of a pole with sufficient explosive power to hoist the mightiest dreadnaught ever built out of the sea and I am going to tell Secretary Daniels so when I see him,” said Mr. Ford.
75 Years Ago – September 26, 1940
Carney wins potato picking contest — Cheered to the echo by a crowd of wildly excited spectators, John Carney of Ashland won the first annual New England Potato Picking Championship Contest at the Eastern States Exposition in Springfield, Mass., last week.
173 enrolled at Island Falls — The total enrollment of Island Falls High and Junior High school is 173; seniors 23, juniors 21, sophomores 22, freshmen 38, eighth grade 30, and seventh grade 29.
50 Years Ago – September 23, 1965
Bargain Pickin’ prices at Zayre — Prices advertised for the week include a General Electric AM table radio for $8.88, an Udico portable vacuum cleaner for $12.88, a Sunbeam Shave Master electric shaver for $16.88, and a Hamilton Beach electric knife for $16.88.
Cumming exchanges to Poland — Alexander B. Cumming, son of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Cumming of Houlton, and principal of the Estabrook School in Lexington, Mass., flew to Warsaw, Poland with personnel of the American School of Warsaw.

Computer users — The September meeting of the Southern Aroostook Computer Users Group was cancelled for the month due to construction underway at the school.
Shire Enquirer — Winning elections for the Houlton High School Student Council are: Tasha Smallwood, Stephen Wotton, Jennifer Lynds, Krista Rossignol and Tara Kelley, all from seventh grade. From eight grade are Daniel Rhoda, Dana LaPointe, Serena Vandevender, Kellie Thomas and Dennis Daly. The president of this year’s Student Council is Jennifer O’Leary.
