HOULTON, Maine — A Linneus man and his passenger escaped injury early Thursday evening when the driver lost control of his vehicle on Bangor Road and careened into a ditch.
Maurice Boyce, 36, was westbound on the road in a 2007 Subaru at about 4:30 p.m. Thursday when the accident happened as he approached the intersection of Walker Road, Houlton Police Capt. Dan Pelletier said Friday.
Boyce was slowing down to make a turn at a speed of about 40 mph when he realized that he could not reduce his speed fast enough to avoid hitting the rear of another vehicle heading in the same direction in front of him, according to Pelletier.
Boyce steered the vehicle to the right to avoid striking the car and lost control of the Subaru in the gravel roadway, the officer reported.
The Subaru skidded across the intersection, ending up in a ditch on the other side of Walker Road, according to Pelletier. Both Boyce and his passenger, Rebecca Kozowski, 15, were wearing seat belts and were not injured Pelletier said.
It is unclear whether the driver of the vehicle in front was aware of the accident or not, but that car did not stop. The Subaru driven by Boyce and owned by Susan King received “reportable damage” in the accident, according to the captain.
Unsafe speed was cited as a factor in the crash, which was investigated by Sgt. Eric Crouse.
