Houlton runners compete at PVC Small School Invitational

LEE, Maine — On Sept. 15, the PVC Small School invitational was hosted by Lee Academy and while the meet may have been dominated by Class C powerhouse Orono High School, several Houlton Shiretowners gave the elite program a run for their money among the individual ranks.
Dexter, Central, Calais, and Mattanawcook Academy also raced the 2.5-mile heavily wooded trail system. Boys team scores were: Orono, 15; Lee, 66; Central 79; and MA, 89. Dexter, Houlton and Calais did not have five boys to count for team scoring.

Girls’ team scores were: Orono, 15; MA, 51; and Lee, 76. Houlton, Calais and Central did not have enough for team scoring, there were no girls from Dexter running.
“Houlton’s Isaiah Brown, Rylee Warman and Taylor Reed found out in a post race interview that they gave the Orono runners an unexpected workout as Orono had planned to use the race to pack run as a team,” coach Chris Rines said. “A blogger from me.milesplit asked race winner Tristan Butterfield of Orono and Isaiah if they had any strategies for today to which Butterfield had made the pack running comment, Isaiah replied ‘I wanted to join them.’”
The girls ran a similar strategy and although Orono swept the top 5, Warman and Reed kept Orono’s fifth runner honest by pushing the pace.
Tim Glatter, Adam Casillas, Olivia Winslow and Kate Newman all had season best pace per mile times showing improvement during a difficult part of our schedule.
“With the Presque Isle Invite only held just last Saturday and the Caribou night meet (this past) Friday, managing our work and rest not only plays a role with our performances but staying healthy as well,” Rines said.
Results for the boys with the runner’s pace per mile in parentheses, were: 2, Isaiah Brown, 14:16, (5:42); 17, Adam Casillas, 16:22, (6:32); and 38, Tim Glatter, 19:24, (7:45).
Results for the girls, with the runner’s pace per mile in parentheses, were: 6, Rylee Warman,  18:03, (7:13); 8, Taylor Reed, 18:36, (7:26); 15, Olivia Winslow, 20:22, (8:08); and 35, Kate Newman 30:22, (12:08).
