Performances by popular gospel artists a boost to Houlton

HOULTON, Maine — The upcoming concert appearance of Guy Penrod is just one among many gospel artists that have agreed to perform in Houlton in recent years.

Renowned gospel artist, Guy Penrod will perform at Military Street Baptist Church on Friday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. The concert is sponsored by Greater Houlton Christian Academy.
Enhancing Houlton’s notoriety as the “Music Town of Maine,” concert organizers, Wayne Watson and Peter Holmes, are pleased to partner with Greater Houlton Christian Academy (GHCA) to promote the popular gospel genre, while also supporting a local community organization like GHCA.
Fans travel from Nova Scotia and New Hampshire to attend these ticketed events, which brings an added awareness of the community from a wide radius. The shows have a financial trickle-down in short bursts to area merchants, restaurants, convenience stores, gas stations, etc.
“It is so exciting to have nationally and internationally acclaimed gospel artists come to Houlton,” said Watson. “Our volunteer efforts to bring great music to the area as a way to raise funds and awareness for GHCA are no different than any other volunteer who rides a bicycle in the annual GHCA Bike-a-thon, cooks spaghetti for the Valentine’s Day Dinner, or shovels the walkway.”
“We are all just a small part of something bigger than ourselves,” added Holmes. “It definitely gives us great satisfaction to hear the delight of concert-goers as they leave our events, expressing thanks and anticipation about the next concert!  We always tell fans to ‘like’ the Facebook group ‘Greater Houlton Gospel Music’ to keep informed of future dates.”
