Walk planned to mark White Cane Awareness

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine The Star City will join the American Council of the Blind in Maine to celebrate Maine White Cane Awareness Day on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2015 with the annual White Cane Walk.

The event will begin at 10 a.m., gathering in the parking lot near Wilder’s Jewelry Store on Main Street. As always, independent cane and guide dog travelers throughout the blind and visually impaired community, along with family and friends, are welcome to attend.
Walks will also be held in Augusta, Bangor and Portland.
According to the ACB-Maine, “White canes, as well as guide dogs, are used with training by blind and visually impaired folks to travel and maneuver throughout their communities in an independent and capable manner.”
The organization urges drivers to be aware of and comply with Maine’s white cane law, which requires them to stop and yield the right of way to anyone using a cane or guide dog in a crosswalk.
