Webster’s II Dictionary says that the definition for ‘stop’ is “to cease moving.”
Maine Motor Vehicle Statutes say that to stop when it’s required means “complete cessation of movement.”
So the next time you come to a “STOP” sign, just slowing down, or hitting your brakes so your vehicle is doing one of those rocking-motion things before you continue on, or just not even attempting to STOP, doesn’t cut it! Your vehicle needs to come to a complete STOP, which means that your vehicle’s wheels are not turning and there is no motion to your vehicle.
This is not only the law, with a fine of $131 you may have to pay if you get a ticket, but it also makes all kinds of sense. By completely stopping your vehicle it gives you time to ensure it’s safe to proceed, which may save someone’s life.
