Holocaust survivor to speak in Houlton

HOULTON, Maine — Houlton Middle/High School will once again host an educational guest speaker series this school year. On Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 7 p.m in the school auditorium, Charles Rotmil, a survivor of the Holocaust, will give an open presentation to the community.

The next day, Rotmil will speak to students at the school at 8:15 a.m.

Rotmil was a 5-year-old boy living in Vienna, Austria when the Gestapo burst into his family’s apartment and took him away. Outside, synagogues burned to the ground and thousands of Jewish people were arrested. Today, that night is known as “Kristallnacht,” or the night of broken glass.  The next few years of his life involved escapes, further arrests, gas chambers and survival.
