Woodland students get rolling with new bikes

WOODLAND, Maine — The Perloff Family Foundation recently awarded Woodland Consolidated School with a $2,000 Fast Track Grant to purchase bicycles for their physical education program.

“David and Sandy Perloff’s foundation has supported our school a lot in the past couple of years,” said Woodland School Principal Susie Schloeman.

The school purchased 20 bikes, with boys and girls getting 10 each. Students in grades 4-6 can now ride their bicycles on the 2.1-mile cross-country trail behind their school during gym class. Additionally, the children now have the option to participate in an after-school bicycle program.

“The program is designed to promote fitness, improve cycling skills, and to encourage these students to enjoy a lifelong activity,” said Schloeman.

The Perloff Foundation has previously awarded Woodland School grants for snow shoes, archery equipment, and a variety of instruments for the music program.

According to the principal, a representative from the foundation will occasionally check to see if schools are properly using the the awarded equipment. They will ask questions about the materials and the frequency with which they are used by the students. If they find that students are not actually using the items, then the Perloff Foundation will remove the equipment and donate it to a school with a greater need for the materials, ensuring that nothing goes to waste.
