1915: Caught in a rut

115 Years Ago – 1900

     – A long distance telephone has been placed in Henry Bradstreet’s meat market and grocery store this week.

     – Open time for moose commences next Monday, October 15. Moose are reported as being very plentiful this season.

100 Years Ago – October 6, 1915

    Caught in a rut — H.L. Cates is confined to the house on account of being somewhat injured in an automobile accident last Thursday. While driving at a moderate rate of speed, one wheel of the auto got caught in a rut, overturning the machine. Fortunately, the accident was not considered serious.

    New postal regulations — Postal regulations were modified by the Postmaster General Burleson Monday to permit the use of motorcycles with side bodies by rural carriers, under special authority from the department in each case.

75 Years Ago – October 10, 1940

    Registration Day — The Congress of the United States declared that “it is imperative to increase and train the personnel of the armed forces of the United States,” thus providing for the common defense. It shall be the duty of every male citizen and of every male alien between the ages of 21 and 36 to register for selective training on Wednesday, October 16.

    Large spud — A 4 pound, 4 oz. potato now holds top honors in the M.D. McGrath potato sweepstakes. The entry was submitted by E.R. Greenier from Caribou. Fourteen spuds from these entries ranging from 2 lbs., 7 ozs. to 3 lbs., 3 ozs have been sent to the McGrath office in Portland.

50 Years Ago – October 6, 1965

    Car chase — What the police called some of the wildest and most reckless driving witnessed here in many years landed Kenneth L. Hartley, 20, in jail Saturday night. The car allegedly driven by Hartley was finally run off the road by police on South main Street following a chase that covered a large section of the town. Roadblocks were set up to stop the attempt of the driver to get outside town limits. Speeds were clocked at 100 mph.

    Joyland — A new toy, game and baby furniture store is opening up at the Caribou Shopping Center on Access Highway. Joyland is “ready to help you make your selections for Christmas, birthdays and any special occasion.” They also have layaway available.

25 Years Ago – October 10, 1990

    Computer curriculum — Caribou students in grades kindergarten through eight will benefit from a newly designed computer technology curriculum. Teacher Carl Ouellette presented copies of the K-8 computer technology curriculum, noting that two elementary schools now have the equivalent of one computer per classroom while the middle school has a full lab.

    New Republican office — Caribou’s Republican party headquarters was formally opened by Governor John R. McKernan at a ribbon cutting ceremony, yesterday. The office is located in the Downtown Mall in the former law office of Reginald Burleigh.
