By Jennifer Buzza

The towns of Mapleton, Castle Hill and Chapman were awarded the Maine Department of Labor’s Safety and Health Award for Public Employers (SHAPE) at a ceremony conducted by Department of Labor Commissioner Jeanne Paquette, Director of Maine’s Bureau of Labor Standards Pamela Megathlin and Occupational Safety and Health Supervisor Michael LaPlante on October 14, 2015 at the Mapleton Town Office.

The honor recognizes public sector employers who maintain an exemplary safety and health management system. Acceptance into SHAPE is an achievement that distinguishes an organization as a model for workplace safety and health. Upon receiving SHAPE recognition, the worksite will be exempt from programmed inspections during the period the SHAPE certification is valid.
The Towns’ SHAPE award is valid until July 2017 and includes the Fire Department, Highway Department, Town Office and Recreation Department. The Mapleton Fire Department has been in the SHAPE program since 2009 and has maintained its certification since receiving its initial award.
According to LaPlante, Mapleton, Castle Hill and Chapman become only the eighth municipality to receive the award having all departments represented.

Photo Contest

The towns of Mapleton, Castle Hill and Chapman are sponsoring a photo contest for all residents. The winning entries will be featured on the cover and within the pages of the 2015 Mapleton, Castle Hill and Chapman Town Report.
Each resident (of any age) may submit two entries and the entry must represent the communities. The photo must have enough contrast and color to print well and must be compatible with a “portrait” position, to fit on the report cover. The resident’s name, address and phone number must be submitted with the photos. There should be no title on the photo, as the town report title will already be printed on the cover.
The three winners will be selected by the town office employees and selectmen. Each of these winners will be awarded a gift certificate for $20 to a Mapleton restaurant of their choice and their photo will be featured in the annual report and on the towns’ website. One grand overall prize winner will be selected from the three winners and receive an additional $10 gift certificate. His/her submission will also be featured on the cover of the Town Report.
The contest deadline is January 29, 2016. Visit the towns’ website at www.mapleton.me for more information.

The Mapleton United Methodist Church will host a Bible school for children ages 6-12, called “Fun Fridays,” this Friday evening, Oct. 23, from 6-7:30 p.m.
