Shires, Warriors and Hawks are playoff bound

It is on to the postseason for the Houlton, Southern Aroostook and Hodgdon boys squads as the regular season came to a close Tuesday. The preliminary playoffs begin Friday, Oct. 23 for Class D and Saturday, Oct. 24, 2015 for Class C.

As of Tuesday morning, Houlton (8-4-2, 63.1122 points) is sixth in the Class C North region. The Shires will host the No. 11 squad, currently Sumner (4-9-1, 18.7555) on Saturday. The two teams did not meet during the regular season.

In the Class D North region, Southern Aroostook (6-7-1, 45.2806) is 10th, while Hodgdon (6-8, 25.1531) is 14th. Both teams will be on the road in the postseason. SACS will play at the No. 7 seed (currently Washburn, 8-4-1, 73.9541) Friday. The Warriors lost to Washburn 5-1 at home Aug. 21 and 6-3 Oct. 17 at Washburn.

Hodgdon must travel to the No. 3 seed (currently Ashland, 9-4-1, 128.1378) Friday. The Hawks faced Ashland twice in the regular season — losing 7-2 Oct. 3 at Ashland and 2-0 Oct. 16 at home.

The following is a recap of games played through Monday.

Katahdin 5, East Grand 4 — At Danforth Oct. 13, Daniel Moody-Kay scored in the second overtime to lift Katahdin of Stacyville past East Grand. Devin McGraw scored two goals for the 1-11 Cougars, while Riley Somers and Tyson Porter tallied a goal each.

Trevor Fronzcak scored twice to lead the Vikings and Philip Farley and Brady McEwen added a goal each.

So. Aroostook 0, Fort Fairfield 8 — At Fort Fairfield Oct. 14, Yoni Majia had three goals and three assists to pace the Tigers. Landon Kinney added two goals, while Chris Giberson, Jonah Daigle and Jared Harvey each scored once and Isaac Cyr contributed two assists and Ryan Player had one assist.

Noah Altvater and Steve Rackliffe combined for 18 saves in goal for Southern Aroostook.

Woodland 5, East Grand 0 — At Danforth Thursday, Noah Southard scored three goals to propel Woodland (10-1-1) to victory over East Grand (1-11) over East Grand (1-11).

Riley Russell and Drew Hayward also scored for the Dragons.

Houlton 9, Calais 0 — At Houlton Thursday, Pat Howe and Connor Grant both tallied hat tricks to lead the scoring for the Shires. Jacob Worthley also scored two goals and Abe Lorom added one in the rout of the Blue Devils.

Connor Grant was involved in seven of nine scores for the Shires and added four assists. AJ Henderson did not face a shot in goal. Matthew Perkins had 23 saves for Calais

Ashland 2, Hodgdon 0 — At Hodgdon Friday, Ben Philbrook scored two minutes into the game for what was the eventual game-winner for Ashland. The 9-4-1 Hornets also received a goal from Lucas Craig. Timothy Tarr made six saves on 11 shots.

Wyatt Foster made 22 saves on 26 shots for 6-7 Hodgdon.

Schenck 5 Katahdin 0 — At Stacyville Friday, Justin Thompson recorded a hat trick to propel Schenck to the win over the Cougars. Koty Pelletier and Mitchell McDunnait each chipped in a goal for the Wolverines of East Millinocket. Chris King made three saves on nine shots.

Oberto Rigaberto had three saves on 15 shots for Katahdin.

Shead 7, Hodgdon 5 — At Hodgdon Saturday, Ryan Eylar scored three goals for a hat trick to lead Shead of Eastport by the Hawks. Micahel Moores, Ian Sullivan and Ethan Lank each added a goal for the Tigers, who finish the regular season at 13-0-1. The first goal was an own goal.

Hodgdon (6-8) was led by Jimmy Buzzell with four goals and Jordyn Merritt with one. Daden Palmer had two assists.

So. Aroostook 3, Washburn 6 — At Washburn Saturday, Noah Caron, Justin Davis and Kevin Jordan each scored twice as the Beavers defeated the Southern Aroostook Warriors of Dyer Brook.

Jackson Mathers led the way for the Warriors scoring two goals and assisting on the third goal.

East Grand 1, Fort Fairfield 11 — At Fort Fairfield Saturday, Ryan Player tallied four goals to help the Tigers roll past East Grand. Jonah Daigle scored three goals while Chris Giberson, Justy McKenney, Isaac Cyr and Josh Ricker added one goal apiece.

Peter Apgar scored the lone goal for East Grand of Danforth.

So. Aroostook 4, Woodland 1 — At Woodland Monday, the Warriors ended their season with a 4-1 victory. SACS’ Tyler Batchelder opened the scoring with two goals en route to Southern Aroostook’s victory over Woodland.

The Dragons’ Noah Southard tallied a goal to cut the lead, but Josh Perrin scored on the ensuing kickoff nine seconds later to make it 3-1 for the Warriors. Nolan Alvator scored after coming out of the net for the second half to secure the win for Southern Aroostook.

Mattanawcook 1, Houlton 5 — At home Monday, Houlton ended its season with an impressive win over Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln.

Connor Grant started the scoring for Houlton unassisted with 33 minutes left in the half. Pat Howe scored six minutes later from an assist from Grant. Abe Lorom scored with 18 minutes left in the first half on an assist from Zach Fitzpatrick.

Davey Susen scored for Mattanawcook with 12 minutes in the half to end the first half scoring.

Jacob Worthley scored for Houlton with 10 minutes left on an assist from Connor grant to bring the score to 4-1. Grant finished the scoring for the Shires on an assist from Zach Fitzpatrick.

Houlton’s AJ Henderson had five saves against eight shots and Mattanawcook’s Nate Merritt had 11 saves against 22 shots.

Easton 6, Katahdin 2 — At Stacyville, Drew Sotomayor scored three goals to propel the Bears by the Cougars. Jordan White, Logan Halvorson and Trevor Hathaway each chipped in with a goal for Easton and Isaac Currier added an assist. Jake Flewelling and White combined for six saves. Easton finished the regular season with an 8-5-1 record.

Nick Ryan and Daniel Moody-Kay each notched a goal for Katahdin (1-13) while Tyson Porter and Riley Somers each recorded an assist. Rigoberto Otero finished with 15 saves.

Central Aroostook 5, East Grand 1 — At Danforth Monday, CAHS picked up the 5-1 victory. Individual results were not reported by presstime.
