115 Years Ago – 1900

    New brick — A “handsome” large brick fireplace is being added to the Vaughan House. Guests staying at the Vaughn House will find this popular hostelry a very comfortable place during cold winter weather.

100 Years Ago – Oct. 28, 1915

    Traffic — Almost every day now, at least three automobiles may be standing outside the high school building during school hours.  Not only that, several automobiles are taking many pupils home after school.

75 Years Ago – Oct. 24, 1940

    Indian Beads donated — A string of 13 beads that were found 30 years ago while digging for holes for construction on the north shore of Portage Lake were recently donated to the Nylander Museum in Caribou.

50 Years Ago – Oct. 28, 1965

    Fresh water? — The day may not be too distant when Caribou will have an improved drinking water supply.  This week, the Caribou Water Works Corporation has initiated test operations at three different sites within the town in search for fresh water.  Currently, the Aroostook River has been the source for generations, but the condition of the water in recent years has heard complaints by residents.

    Dedication — The conference room at the Cary Memorial Hospital was recently dedicated in memory of the late Lionel J. Guerrette, a “long-standing employee” of the institution.  Guerette died on February 13 of this year, serving the hospital for more than 22 years.

25 Years Ago – Oct. 24, 1990

    Santa’s hangout — Santa will have a place to hang out this winter thanks to a decision made by the Caribou City Council Monday night.  Mike Bosse, interim director of the chamber seeks permission to construct a temporary building under the Downtown Mall cover.  Northeast Propane will provide the fuel to heat the building.

    Playground project — School and park officials began work on the Teague Park Restoration project. The new playground will include a playfield, creative play area, nature area and gazebo.  Funding for the project will come from federal and local sources, as well as private donations.
