LITTLETON — A 62-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the shooting Sunday night of the man she lives with at their home on Foster Road.

Officers arrested Margaret Barnes Sunday night, and she was charged with elevated aggravated assault.

Aroostook County Sheriff Darrell Crandall said Tuesday that Margaret Barnes was charged with shooting Scott Barnes, 52. Scott Barnes lived in the same home, but Sheriff Crandall could not confirm his relationship to Margaret Barnes.

The victim, who was shot at about 9 p.m. Sunday, was taken to Houlton Regional Hospital and later transferred to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, Crandall said. Details about his condition were not released Tuesday.

Crandall said deputies and Maine State Police troopers responded Sunday night to a call about a man being shot at the home.

He said detectives from the sheriff’s office and state police are working together on the investigation. No additional information was released by police on Monday.

Houlton Police Chief Joe McKenna said Tuesday that officers were called to Doc’s Place on the North Road in Houlton on Friday to investigate a report of a woman acting irrationally. When they arrived, they found Margaret Barnes inside the store.

McKenna said that officers were able to get her outside and take her to Houlton Regional Hospital, where she underwent a psychological evaluation. She was apparently released from the hospital and was back home at the time of the shooting on Sunday.

Margaret Barnes remains in custody at the Aroostook County Jail. Bail is set at $25,000 cash or $50,000 surety. Detectives are continuing the investigation.
