Drug discussion tonight at PIMS

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine The Presque Isle Kiwanis Club, in partnership with The Aroostook Medical Center, the Presque Isle Police Department, Aroostook County Action Program and Aroostook Substance Abuse Program are coordinating a community drug education and awareness night tonight, Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2015 from 6-8 p.m. at the Presque Isle Middle School Auditorium.

The event is aimed at engaging the public in a discussion about the increase in sales, circulation and abuse of illicit drugs in the county including the re-emergence of heroin, bath salts, meth and marijuana as well as the continued problem of prescription drug abuse.
The public will also hear from expert panelists who are engaged in regular drug prevention and education as well as combating the problem and protecting communities. They are Presque Isle Police Chief Matt Irwin; ACAP’s Carol Bell; Aroostook Substance Abuse Program’s Mark Shea; and TAMC’s Dr. David Weed, a doctor of osteopathic medicine. The evening will be moderated by local television news reporter Shawn Cunningham.
This event is designed as a frank discussion about what is happening in the community, what resources are available and what is being done to combat drug-related crime. It is also aimed at spurring civic responsibility to encourage neighbors to look out for neighbors and even partner with police in keeping a watchful eye out for and reporting any illegal activity.
There will also be an open question-and-answer opportunity between the public and panelists.
