The final cross country meet of the season is Nov. 6 as UMPI runners who qualified will make the trip to Lakeland, Fla. for the USCAA National Championships.

On Saturday, the Owls were in Waterville for a dual meet against Thomas College. The men won by a score of 23-32 and were paced by Connor Hrunyk. The freshman from Boonville, N.Y. came in first overall with a time of 17 minutes and 10 seconds on the 8K course. Sully Jackson, a junior from Wilton, was second overall and was 23 seconds behind his Owl teammate.
Mitch St. Peter of Caribou, Trevor Levesque of Presque Isle and Saul Nunez of Mapleton were fifth, seventh and eighth, respectively, as the other UMPI scorers.
The women’s team from the university was beaten by the Terriers, 24-34, as Chenoa Jackson, a freshman from Wilton, was third; Sara Bell, a junior from Unity, took fourth; and Tabitha Taylor, a sophomore from Ticonderoga, N.Y., came in fifth. Jackson had a time of 24:23 to lead the way for UMPI. Elise Gudde of Caribou and Shawna McDonough of Alexander were the others figuring in the scoring for coach Chris Smith’s team.

Volleyball team drops final two matches

The UMPI volleyball team finished play last Tuesday with a pair of 3-0 losses to Maine Maritime Academy in Castine.
The scores in the first match were 25-13, 25-16 and 25-7, while in the second they were 25-13, 25-20 and 25-8.
Morgan Swan, a senior from Caribou, had eight digs and Abby Jewett, a junior from Bass Harbor, had three kills and five digs in the opener.
Jewett and Swan contributed three kills each in the second match, while Swan also had seven digs. Hannah Williams, a freshman from Park Falls, Nova Scotia, notched six assists.
Hannah Boyce, a senior from Bar Harbor, was honored as the Association of Division III Independents Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 11. She led UMPI with 13 kills and 11 service aces in a win over Green Mountain College in Vermont.
Coach Mark Kornachuk’s Owl squad completed the season with a record of 4-22.

Loss to UMFK ends season for Owl women’s soccer team

A 9-0 loss to UM-Fort Kent Saturday put an end to the regular season for the UMPI women’s soccer team.
The previous weekend, UMPI fell to Fisher College, 5-0, before nipping Wheelock College the following day, 3-2, in matches played in Boston. The goal scorers in the win were Bethany Heald of Enfield, Jessy Dickison of Houlton and Janae Libby of Fort Fairfield. Libby also assisted on the Heald goal, while goalkeeper Allie Lopez of Kingfield saved six shots in the victory.
The team, coached by Trevor Parent, finished with a 5-9-1 record, which was an improvement from 2014. UMPI started strong, but an ankle injury to sophomore Sam Nadeau of St. David proved costly as the team’s top scoring threat missed several weeks of action.
The team will lose three players — senior Abi Riitano of Abbot and juniors Heald and Mikaelah Tracy of Houlton. Riitano is graduating, while Heald will be in the United Kingdom next year as part of an international exchange program and Tracy is receiving her Physical Therapist Assistant degree.

UMPI men wrap up year at 3-13-1

The Owls sandwiched losses to Fisher College Oct. 17 and UM-Fort Kent Oct. 21 with a 4-1 triumph over Wheelock College Oct. 18.
Coach Alan Gordon’s team ended up with a 3-13-1 record.
In the team’s final victory of the season, Cody Blair, a freshman from Ashland, and Chris Daly, a sophomore from Kingfield, tallied two goals each, while Dan Swallow, a junior from Houlton, and Johnny Theriault, a freshman from Fort Fairfield, netted one each as UMPI downed Wheelock, 6-2, in Boston.
Derek Healy, a junior from Hanover, Mass., scored an unassisted goal the previous afternoon in the 6-1 loss to Fisher in another match played in Boston.
Last Wednesday, the Owls suffered a 7-0 loss at UM-Fort Kent.
UMPI will lose two players to graduation — goalkeeper Caleb Bragg-Grady of Whitefield, and midfielder Josh Cross of Bremen. Bragg-Grady finished the season in the top three in saves and the top 25 in save percentage in the USCAA.

Owl golf team plays in Colby Classic

The UMPI golf team played a team event at Waterville Country Club Oct. 11, with three two-person teams entering the competition.
The duo of Noah Bernard of Fort Fairfield and Eric Depner of Farmington, Conn. had the best performance for UMPI with a 74 (35 on the front nine and 39 on the back). It was good enough for fourth overall.
Junior Hazen Dauphinee of Bradley and the Owls’ lone senior, Jordan Beaulier of Ashland, was sixth with a 76.
Beaulier was named USCAA Golfer of the Week for the week ending Oct. 11. He shot a 78 in a match play event against Maine Maritime Academy.
